Mar 24 – MIRROR!

“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror” (James 1:23).

Here, the Scripture and mirror are compared with each other. When a man looks at a mirror, he understands how his appearance is. But the Scripture looks at the man and it looks at intuitions.

Certain sisters will be having a tiny mirror in their handbags. Every now and then, they will look their face in it and adjust their hair. If they feel that their face is full of sweat they will wash their face using soap to clean it. The mirror helps them to keep their face intact.  Just as the mirror, the Scripture reflects the condition of your soul when you read the verses, and it helps in purifying yourself.

There is a funny story. A monkey was able to get a big mirror. On seeing its face in the mirror, it thought, “How beautiful I am. But this mirror shows me like a monkey.” Saying this, it kept the mirror away. After some time, it again saw its face in the mirror. On seeing the monkey image again, it got frustrated.

The monkey had a look at the mirror for the third time, and it became furious. It thought that there was some error in the mirror and hit the mirror on a stone and broke it to pieces. After the anger getting subsided, it took a broken piece of mirror and looked into it once more. Each of the broken pieces of the mirror showed its face like that of a monkey. The mirror shows the outward appearance correctly, and if at all, there is one thing which shows the true inner man, it is nothing but the Scripture.

In the book of ‘Song of Solomon’ Shulamite looks at her face and says, “I am dark, but lovely” (Song of Solomon 1:5). She possesses both darkness and beauty. The nature of Adam was dark, and at the same time, the characteristics of Christ are beautiful.  The sin made it dark, but the blood of Christ has made it beautiful..

When you read the Scripture, seek God and say, “Lord, show me what I am. Let all sinful characteristics and shortfalls, are eliminated from me.” Some people have a plank in their eyes but accuse others pointing out the speck in their eyes.

Dear children of God, evaluate yourself once, before accusing others. Is the characteristic of God seen in you?  To meditate: “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light” (Mathew 6:22).
