JUNE 26 – HE MUST INCREASE!

“He who comes from above is above all. He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:31, 30).

Jesus Christ witnessed that among those born of women, there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist. But, look at that John the Baptist. Though he was a great personality, witnessed by God so highly, he humbles before God and says, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

What is the reason for John the Baptist to say so? The Scripture says. “He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all” (John 3:31).

Once, Sadhu Sunder Singh visited Trivandrum for a ministerial purpose. There, a poor woman came to him crying, carrying her dead son on her shoulders. Her tears made Sadhu pity her. Sadhu took the dead child in his hands, lifted his eyes towards God and prayed earnestly. God heard his prayer and miraculously gave back life to the child. The child opened the eyes and smiled at her mother. The joy of the mother was immeasurable.

She fell on the feet of Sadhu Sunder Singh, bowed him and said, “Sir, you are my God. You are the true form of God. It is you who gave life back to my child.” The heart of Sadhu Sunder Singh was pierced. He repeatedly told the woman that he was just a man and it was God who did the miracle. But the woman did not pay heed to his words and continued to praise him.

Sadhu Sunder Singh was broken-hearted and told God, “Lord, you are God with life. It is you who gave life to this child. The child was resurrected by your Name. When it is so, this women refuses to understand the truth and praises me. Forgive me and forgive this woman too also. God, if the people are going to praise me like this, please take away the gifts of performing miracles from me.”

May you exalt God always and humble yourself! Let God alone be the head of your family and ministry. Never try to pull the people towards you. Guide them towards the feet of God. Then, God will glorify and bless you. Let the prayer of “He must increase, but I must decrease” be always in your heart.

To meditate: “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant” (Mathew 20:26).
