Feb 27 – Be Still!
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
When your heart is in turmoil, when you are oppressed by many worries, and when you are confused and do not know what to do, sit quietly at the feet of the Lord. When you are surrounded by people who find fault with everything—where even good words are misunderstood and every action is criticized—choose to sit silently.
When you sit still, the Lord Himself will contend for you and fight your battles. When you remain still, you will see the Lord rise up zealously on your behalf.
Is a storm raging against you today? Is the sea of your life in upheaval? Do all your efforts seem useless? Sit in the presence of the Lord. Then the Lord will arise and command the storm and the sea, saying, “Peace, be still,” and He will bring calm.
That is exactly what happened on the Sea of Galilee when the disciples were crossing it. The violent storm and the raging waves were stilled. That sea—about eighteen miles long and thirteen miles wide—became calm. The storm ceased, and divine peace prevailed.
This has also been the experience of many saints. When troubles and opposition arise against their ministry, they quietly withdraw for two or three days to spend time alone with the Lord. They fall at His feet in prayer. They pour out their sorrows and pain to the Lord alone. And when they return, renewed with strength like eagles, they find that the Lord has already completed the work on their behalf.
When the Israelites were terrified seeing the Egyptian army pursuing them—chariots and soldiers advancing rapidly—and feared what Pharaoh might do, do you know what Moses said? “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:13-14)
What does it mean when it says, “You shall be still”? It simply means you will sit still. The apostle Peter also gives counsel along these lines—not only to sit still, but to remain submitted and humble:
“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6)
Beloved children of God, the time when you sit silently before the Lord is the very time when you will witness what comes upon the wicked. It is the moment when the Lord rises up as a mighty Warrior on your behalf. Then you will behold the greatness and the glory of the Lord.
Verse for further meditation: “For behold, I will save you from afar, and your seed from the land of their captivity.” (Jeremiah 30:10)
