Mar 07 – HE WILL COMFORT !

“As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).

How wonderful it is to be comforted like a mother by the Lord! While the father takes care of the disciplining, the child definitely needs someone who will comfort him. The mother in the family takes cares of that role of comforting.

There are some families where the father comes back home in a drunken state and beat the children. There are families where the father is always busy with work, to the extent of neglecting family and children. And there are some other families, where because of the incessant quarrels, the children lead their lives according to their whims and fancies. In such situations, it is only the mother who consoles and comforts the child. While looking at various options for comforting, the Lord chose the mother as the right example. He said that He will comfort like a mother.

The Lord carries you like as a father carries his son, and has compassion on him, like a father. At the same time, He is so deeply loving as a mother. He revealed Himself to Abraham as El Shaddai. The Hebrew name El Shaddai means someone who comforts as a mother would comfort her child on her bosom, someone who cares like a mother and who loves and nourishes like a mother.

Normally the time spent by children with the father, is very limited. It may because the father is working in a distant land and visit home once or twice in a year and the children will be eagerly looking forward to such visits. Whereas children spend most of their time with the mother. Many times, we see the mother taking up the responsibility of the father as well.

Sometimes grown-up children, even after completing their education, settling down in a job and having children of their own, long to be with their mother when they fall sick. They wish to have her comforting presence and consoling words, which will bring great joy to them. Indeed, no one can be a substitute for mother’s love. The mother never forgets her child and her love is so unchanging.

The Lord asks: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely, they may forget, Yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15). Children of God, the Lord never forgets you. You should also never forget Him, the One who never forsakes you.

Verse for further meditation: “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” Says your God. “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned” (Isaiah 40:1-2)
