Dec 09 – Blessed Woman!

“Her children rise up and call her blessed” (Proverbs 31:28).

The word “blessed” (for a man) appears eighty four times in the Bible. And the term “blessed woman” appears seven times. In the Old Testament, Leah calls herself a blessed woman (Genesis 30:13), and in the New Testament, we see Mary being called blessed (Luke 1:48).

There are three main reasons why Mary was called blessed: Her humility, Her faith, and Her privilege of bearing Christ.

Dear child of God, when these qualities of Mary are formed in us, we too can be called blessed in the sight of the Lord.

“For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).

Throughout Scripture, Mary’s humility stands out. When Jesus performed mighty miracles, she did not boast that those wonders happened through her son. She had no pride that she had carried the Lord of heaven in her womb, nor did she glory in the prophecies spoken about her.

Notice how she referred to herself as a maidservant – not as a queen or exalted mother, but as a humble servant. She praised God, saying that He had looked upon the lowly state of His maidservant. Therefore, she was called blessed.

“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45).

Mary believed every word spoken to her by God. That is why Scripture calls her blessed. Dear child of God, when the Lord gives you a promise – when He speaks something into your life – hold firmly to it. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will by no means pass away.

One day, as Jesus was speaking, a woman cried out, “Blessed is the womb that bore You!” Truly, Mary was blessed – but that blessing does not belong to her alone. Every person who prays and labours in spiritual travail until Christ is formed in souls shares in that same blessedness.

As the Apostle Paul wrote: “My little children, for whom I labour in birth again until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19).

Dear child of God, do you pray with such burden – for souls, for villages, for cities, for the young people around you? Let your prayer be that Christ may be formed in every heart and that each one may grow into His likeness and fullness.

Verse for further meditation: “I am blessed, for the daughters will call me blessed” (Genesis 30:13).
