Dec 08 – The Blessing of Humility!

“Though the Lord is on high, yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar” (Psalm 138:6).

If we, as children of God, truly understand the blessings of humility, we can live as people who have found grace in the sight of the Lord! God looks upon the humble. Not only that -He also gives grace to the humble.

Look at the life of Mahatma Gandhi, who is called the Father of our Nation. How remarkable was his humility! Though he belonged to a different faith, the Lord saw his humble heart and exalted him before the world.

Once, during his travels in South India, Gandhi was deeply moved when he saw the extreme poverty of the people – many did not even have proper clothing. Out of compassion and solidarity, he chose to lay aside his fine foreign garments and decided to wear only the simple Indian dress of the poor. Though he was highly educated, wealthy, and had travelled across many nations, he willingly clothed himself with humility.

Dear child of God, do you desire that the Lord should look upon you with favour? Then clothe yourself with humility! The eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro throughout the earth, rest upon those who are humble in heart.

The Scripture says: “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).

If I were to present a perfect example of humility, I would point you to none other than Jesus Christ Himself. Think about His humility! Though He was equal with the Father, the glorious King of Heaven humbled Himself, taking the form of a servant. The Bible says He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death – even the death of the cross.

How humble He was to be born in a manger! How humble to grow up in a carpenter’s home! “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” He preached from borrowed boats, rode on a borrowed donkey, and was buried in a borrowed tomb. What a simple, humble life He lived for us to follow!

Dear child of God, clothe yourself with humility!

Verse for further meditation: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:10).
