Apr 15 – The One Who Is True!
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens.”’” (Revelation 3:7)
When we write letters, we usually begin with words like: “To my dear mother, from your loving son.”
But when the Lord writes His message to us, He introduces Himself by revealing profound truths about His nature. Here He introduces Himself as “He who is holy, He who is true.” Yes, holiness and truth are the eternal attributes of God.
The God we worship is holy. He is the One who has given us the Holy Scriptures. He is perfectly holy and completely true. Because He is holy, He helps us live in a holy manner. Because He is true, He has given us the Bible—the Book of Truth—to guide us in the path of truth.
In the 4th century A.D., when the first Christian church building was constructed in the land of Israel, the believers of that time wrote a Bible verse on the top of the building so that all who passed by could read it clearly.
However, some years later, when that land came under Islamic rule, the church building was turned into a stable for horses. The verse written above was plastered over and completely hidden.
Many years later, one day the plaster fell off, and the old verse became clearly visible again. Everyone eagerly read the words that appeared: “For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” (Psalm 33:4–5)
Even if heaven and earth pass away, the words of the Lord will never change. He is eternal, true, and holy. The true Word of the Lord brings holiness into our lives.
Though the Scriptures may appear like other books—printed with ink on paper—the Word of God contains Spirit and life. Therefore, it revives souls, makes the simple wise, and even brings healing to the sick. Moreover, His Word itself is holy.
Children of God, walk according to the Word of God. Let it be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path.
Verse for further meditation: “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:16–17)
