Jan 07 – The Covenant!

“But I will establish My covenant with you” (Genesis 6:18).

Throughout Scripture, we see many references to covenants. Kings made covenants with other kings. Ordinary people make covenants with one another. And above all, God makes covenant with His people.

After the flood ended, when Noah and his family came out of the ark, the Lord lovingly looked upon them and said: “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you… every beast of the earth” (Genesis 9:9–10).

As a sign of this covenant, God placed the beautiful rainbow in the sky. He said: “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth… I will remember My covenant… the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh” (Genesis 9:13–15).

Our Lord is the God of covenant. He never breaks what He has established. He is not a man that He should lie or change His mind. He fulfills everything He has spoken.

The same Lord who made a covenant with Noah now makes an everlasting covenant with us: “I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them” (Ezekiel 37:26).

Dear children of God, according to His covenant of peace, the Lord will surely fill your life with His peace. He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He is the God of Peace (Romans 16:20). He is the One who will be our peace (Micah 5:5).

Scripture assures us: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

God made a covenant of Law with Old Testament Israel. But with us—His New Testament children—He has made the Covenant of Calvary, established with His very own blood. What an immeasurable grace!

Every time we partake in the Holy Communion, we remember this covenant of love: “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28).

And whenever we look at a rainbow, our hearts are stirred to praise the God who is faithful to His covenant.

Verse for further meditation: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
