Jan 09 – Food of Every Kind!
“Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.” (Genesis 9:3)
When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them only plant-based food to eat (Genesis 1:29). But after the time of Noah, God chose to give humanity both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. He said, “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you,” and also gave them fish from the sea (Genesis 9:2–3). God graciously provided that man may eat what nourishes and satisfies him.
At one point, the Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron saying, “Who will give us meat to eat in this wilderness? We long for meat… we are tired of eating this manna every day.” Then the Lord caused a wind to blow, bringing quail in abundance into the camp. The people ate and were satisfied.
God fed Elijah in three supernatural ways:
By ravens — “The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening” (1 Kings 17:6).
Through the widow of Zarephath — Her bin of flour and jar of oil did not run dry throughout the famine (1 Kings 17:13–14).
By an angel — Who brought him “a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water” (1 Kings 19:6).
The Lord will also sustain you wonderfully. Jesus said: “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ …Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (Matthew 6:31–32)
During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus fed: Five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. Four thousand people with seven loaves and a few small fish. These multitudes were filled and satisfied with this meal that included fish.
Even after His resurrection, at the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus lovingly prepared food for His disciples. And once again, it was a meal with fish. Scripture records: “Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.” (John 21:9)
Children of God, in this new year, may the Lord Himself feed you, sustain you, and lead you in His goodness!
Verse for further meditation: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)
