Nov 08 – By Day and by Night!
“The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.” (Psalm 121:5)
What a firm, assuring, and powerful promise the Lord has given us! Whether it is day or night, noon or midnight, at any hour, our Lord watches over us with unwavering care.
When God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, they had to journey through a vast wilderness — barren and scorching, without trees or plants for shade. The heat would have been unbearable, especially for the children and infants. But the Lord, in His loving concern, commanded a pillar of cloud to cover them by day. That cloud absorbed the burning heat of the sun and gave them refreshing shade below. How happy and comforted the Israelites must have been, walking cheerfully under that cool covering!
My father once shared, “When I conducted meetings in Vijayawada, the heat there was unbearable. The sun scorched fiercely, especially during the peak summer months. Even houses would suddenly catch fire from the dry heat. During those convention days, I would keep pouring water over myself, waiting eagerly for the evening to come!”
In the same way, the Lord protected the Israelites — a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. His protection was not limited to the day; it continued faithfully through the night.
At night, the desert was full of dangers — fiery serpents that could strike, scorpions ready to sting, and wild beasts roaming in the dark. But the pillar of fire stood as their divine shield. It gave them light to see, drove away venomous creatures, and kept them warm against the cold desert winds.
Even the moon’s rays at night can sometimes cause harm. Continuous exposure to moonlight has been known to bring ailments like rheumatism or nerve weakness. Yet, those who take refuge in the Lord are safe from every danger — no harm will ever come near them.
Dear child of God, the Lord is your keeper! Whether it is day or night, His watchful presence surrounds you.
Verse for further meditation: “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.” (Psalm 91:5–6)
