Nov 06 – RIVER JORDAN !
“I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies” (Genesis 32:10).
In the above verse, we can see the heartfelt gratitude of Jacob. He did not fail to recollect the day when he crossed River Jordan, with nothing but a staff in his hand. He did not forget the days when he – as a young person, walked alone in the wilderness with much uncertainty about future.
The Lord indeed blessed Jacob who crossed River Jordan with nothing but a staff in his hand. God granted him multitude of flocks, many servants and servant maids, and twelve children. Therefore, Jacob looked unto the Lord with a grateful heart and praised Him saying; “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies”.
Jordan is the bigger than all the other rivers in Israel. The term ‘Jordan’ means ‘the river that flows down’. It originates from a spring in Mount Hermon, passes through Sea of Galilee, travels for another sixty-five miles before falling into the Dead Sea. The final point of discharge of River Jordan, is about three thousand feet below its point of origin. As a result of this, it flows with ferocious speed. For the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest (Joshua 3:15).
When Jacob crossed that river, all that he had in his hand was a staff. May be he considered it as the staff of God. He relied on that staff and passed over to Israel. You also should lean on the Lord, whenever huge issues storm in your life. Get firm hold and lean on the promises of God. March forward with the realization that the Lord is with you at all times. And when you do that, you will also praise and thank God for all the benefits that you have received, like Jacob did.
The staff that Jacob relied on was the promise of God. God said, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you” (Genesis 28:15). God was faithful in His promise, and helped Jacob prosper and granted him two companies. Children of God, the God of Jacob will also lead you and guide you.
Verse for further meditation: “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord” (Psalm 116:12-13).
