Jan 07 – New Commandment!
“Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining” (1 John 2:8).
Here Apostle John is referring to as New Commandment. When you walk according to the new commandment, every aspect of your life is renewed. The darkness passes away and the light shines. Indeed, the new commandment leads us into new light.
The old commandments were given to the Israelites through Moses. They were living as an adamant, rebellious and murmuring people. The Lord brought those people under the law and commandments, those who were earlier living without any discipline and as slaves. Those who were leading their lives as they pleased were brought under the law through the ten commandments – which were primarily principles of living. They were governed by that law and commandments. Since they were not able to follow and keep most of those commandments, curses followed after them.
But when we came into the New Testament, the Lord Jesus gave us the commandment of Love. Instead of ten commandments, the Lord placed only two commandments in front of us. First is to love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul. Secondly, to love your neighbour as you love yourselves. This is the new commandment and the new teaching.
Eye for eye, tooth for tooth and life for life was the basis of Old Testament. Whereas the New Commandment teaches us to love your enemies and even your adversaries. The Lord asks us to pray for even those who blaspheme you.
When you come into Christ, you are no longer governed by the law but by the commandment of Love. Loving others should be your primary obligation. Just consider the extent of the love of Jesus toward you. And you should indeed reflect that love toward others.
Children of God, you are now in the days of New Testament. Christ is the one who has made the covenant with you. Unto Him belongs all the glory and honour for being the mediator of the new covenant. Please lift up your hearts to praise and worship Lord Jesus, for His great love.
Verse for further meditation: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah (Hebrews 8:8)
