Oct 08 – THE ROCK AND THE PIT!

“Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug” (Isaiah 51:1).
Prophet Isaiah not only asks to ‘look to the rock from which you were hewn’ but also asks ‘look to the hole of the pit.’ These two factors indicate the commencement of one’s spiritual and worldly lives. There is a mention of two kinds of births in the Scripture. One is the birth from the mother’s womb and the other is the Spiritual birth from the Cross of Calvary.
Nicodemus looked up to Jesus and asked, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” (John 3:4). Jesus answered, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6).
Jesus bifurcates not only the birth but also the death. The first is the physical death and the other is the death of the soul caused by sins. The second death indicates how one takes part in the lake burning with fire and brimstone. Isaiah points out two things that a man has to look into from his birth to death. God says, “Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him” (Isaiah 51:2).
You are the descendant of Abraham. Abraham remains as the father for you, who are the believers. The hole of the pit from which you were dug is Abraham. It was from the father of Abraham, all the Israelites came. Today, you remain as the Spiritual Israelites and you have to look to the rock from which you were hewn.
The Scripture says, “Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, and have forgotten the God who fathered you” (Deuteronomy 32:18). It is God who gave you the birth; a rock who gave you the birth, a rock who gave you the Spiritual life, a rock who washed you, cleansed you and made you a new creation and a saving rock who gave you the Salvation.
The Israelites were very happy in calling Abraham their father. But you who are in the New Testament have also inherited Abraham’s blessings as well as the promises given to him. You get your thirst quenched with the water that springs out from the hole of the pit from which you were dug. At the same time, you lay your foundation on the rock on which you were hewn and raise your Spiritual life with Christ. What a great blessing this is!
To meditate: “Trust in the Lord forever, for in Jehovah, the Lord, is everlasting strength” (Isaiah 26:4).
