Jan 27 – COMPASSION WHICH HEALS!

“And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick” (Mathew 14:14).

We can read about several incidents of Jesus Christ healing the sick. We can find his compassion functioning before His power of healing is revealed.

The Scripture says, “And when Jesus went out, He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick” (Mathew 14:14). “And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them because they were like sheep withouta shepherd. So He began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34).

The heart of Jesus is a tender one. It is the one which is rich in mercy. He is able to show pity because He possesses real love. When Jesus came near the tomb of Lazarus, He saw many people crying there. He did not stop with that. He also pitied and cried. The Scripture says “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). He sheds tears because He loves you sincerely.

Further, He remains as one to feel your sorrow. He shed tears standing near the tomb of Lazarus, and He did not go away with that. With compassion, He said in a loud voice “Lazarus, come forth!” and brought him back to life. It is His compassion which does miracles.

When Jesus Christ went around Galilee and preached and cast out the demons, a leper came to him and knelt before Him. The leper said, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” The Scripture says, “Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; get cleansed.” As soon as He had spoken, immediately leprosy left him, and he got cleansed” (Mark 1:41, 42).

Those who do not have compassion in them cannot touch a leper. People used to be afraid of leprosy. They fear that the dreaded disease is an infectious one. Touching a leper was treated as unclean. In that situation, one will have to sit idle for a whole day.

Leprosy is a disgusting disease. A person afflicted with this disease will be ignored and separated from the society. But, Jesus Christ did not mind and mercifully touched the afflicted person and healed him. Dear children of God, will not that compassionate Jesus Christ pity you?

To meditate: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).
