“…..chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a ….holy priesthood” (I Peter 2:4, 5).
While saying “Precious Stone”, the diamonds, cat’s eye and the rubies will come into one’s thought. But, these stones do not have life in them. These lifeless stones are not precious. Paul the Apostle speaks about a precious stone here. Yes, He is Messiah, a cornerstone of a strong foundation (Isaiah 28:16). Whoever loves and believes Him, He remains as a precious stone of foundation for them.
The Pharisees and the Sadducees rejected Jesus Christ. The Jews shouted to nail Him on the Cross. The Scribes and the Priests of that time handed Him over to the Roman government. He may be a stone rejected by the builders, but He remains as the foundation stone and the chief cornerstone for your faith. You are also built on Him as the dwelling of God.
Dear children of God, have Jesus Christ as the foundation of your life. When you are built with Him who is the precious stone, you will also become precious stones. Your life does not come to an end with the small stay in this world. It will continue as eternal life. You will remain as precious stones in divine presence forever.
In the book of Revelations, there is a description of the construction of Heavenly Jerusalem. The Scripture says, “The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones” (Rev. 21:19). “Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal” (Rev. 21:11). The saints of God are the precious stones found on those thresholds.
When Solomon built the temple, the stones were broken to size, sculpted and made perfect in the quarry itself and brought as finished ones for construction. In the same way, to make you as stones with life in heaven, God guides you through tribulations and troubles, makes you perfect in holiness and raises you as finished stones in Zion and New Jerusalem.
To meditate: “According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation…..For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (I Corinthians 3:10, 11).
